PROJECT 2: GROUP ORAL PRESENTATION AND POP ETHNOGRAPHY

(150 POINTS TOTAL: DUE MONDAY, MAY 2!!!)

OPTION 1: ORAL HISTORY OF POPULAR CULTURE

Using the approaches and concepts from the class discussed so far, interview someone significantly older or younger than yourself about some aspect of popular culture for at least 30 minutes. You must transcribe or summarize this conversation in at least 1500 words. You may present this project in front of class for extra-credit (0-25 points), and share your findings in 15 minutes.

OPTION 2: ATTEND A POPULAR EVENT

Using the approaches and concepts from the class discussed so far, attend a popular event, and write about it in at least 1500 words. You may present this project in front of class for extra-credit (0-25 points), and share your findings in 15 minutes.

OPTION 3: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN TEACH?

Using the approaches and concepts from the class discussed so far, select ANY aspect of popular culture, create a lesson plan outline, and teach the class something new in 15 minutes. Your lesson plan must cover a 50-minute class, and be at least 1500 words each person.

SUGGESTED MODES OF PRESENTATION: Storytelling, Outline, PowerPoint, Text Analysis, Discussion Questions, Group Play or Skit, Etc.

NOTE: I will be grading on a SCALE based on three categories:

1. CLARITY (Style, Grammar, Structure)

2. PRECISION (Description, Logic, Application of Concepts)

3. CREATIVITY (Interpretation, Risk-taking, Artistic Quality)

Project 1: ANALYSIS OF POPULAR SIGNS OR ADVERTISEMENTS*

1. PROPOSAL DUE: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10 (10 POINTS)

2. FINAL EDIT DUE: THURSDAY, MARCH 3 (90 POINTS)

OPTION 1: CHOOSE AN AD & ANALYZE IT

Using the approaches and concepts from the class discussed so far, select one sign or advertisement since the 1960s, and analyze it in at least 1000 words.

OPTION 2: CHOOSE TWO ADS & COMPARE THEM

Using the approaches and concepts from the class discussed so far, select two advertisements since the 1960s, and compare and contrast them in at least 1000 words.

OPTION 3: CREATE A HUMOROUS PARODY OF AN AD & ANALYZE IT

Using the approaches and concepts from the class discussed so far, select one advertisement since the 1960s, create a visual humorous parody of it, and analyze it in at least 500 words. You may sketch out the image portion of this assignment, or use any photo editing software you like.

NOTE: I will be grading on a SCALE based on three categories:

1. CLARITY (30 POINTS)

2. PRECISION (30 POINTS)

3. CREATIVITY (30 POINTS)

*If you decide to work on your project as a group, you will add 500 words per person (MAXIMUM 3 people). For example, if you plan to complete OPTION 1 as a group, you will be expected to write a total of 1500 words as a group, or 750 words per person. EACH PERSON MUST CONTRIBUTE EQUALLY!
