Final Quiz 3: Take-Home Essay
DUE MONDAY, MAY 23, 12PM, ROOM D217 (IN BOX LABELED “HUM15-SPR11”). PLEASE PUT COPY OF QUIZ 3 IN YOUR PORTFOLIO!
Read the entire article by Mark Andrejevic, “The Work of Being Watched: Interactive Media and the Exploitation of Self-Disclosure” (2002) (Click on link to download.) In at least 750 words, apply the concepts and approaches learned within this article (and throughout the course) by first constructing a valid argument and then providing several supporting forms of evidence. You may use any notes or drafts created during class.
QUESTION/PROMPT:
Describe the use of surveillance, power, and privacy controls in at least one form of modern interactive media or digital technology (for example, Facebook, Twitter, iPhone, internet, computers, video games, TV, credit cards, etc.). In what ways are you/we “being watched” through these emerging forms of media and technology? To what end? How do producers of new media and technology give consumers certain freedoms and rights while taking them away through different forms of monitoring?
NOTE: You may draw from your personal experiences to help answer this question. Do not forget to cite any print or online sources you use (author, year, page number). Your ultimate goal is to describe in detail the ways in which interactive media and digital technology test notions of privacy and self-control.
